In 1993, grand-daughter of meringue king Joseito Mateo, Christina Mendez decided to bring her childhood dream of modeling into fruition. Countless auditions, go-sees, and headshot submissions trained this phenom with focus that would prepare her for the amazing journey that was ahead.On the brink of being discovered, Christina and her high school sweetheart of many years discovered that she was pregnant. Excited about the news, Christina decided to put her career on hold to be a full-time mother to her son, Damian Mendez, born in 1996. At the young age of 2, Damian was diagnosed with severe autism and doctors had informed Christina that he would never speak or eat alone. Determined to prove the doctors wrong, Christina put her dream of modeling on hold, to care for her son full-time.Christina's consistent attention and early intervention with Damian's autism, has allowed Damian to beat the odds that were given as well as have him excel tremendously with English, Spanish, sign language, singing, and writing. As Christina's childhood dream of modeling never waned, using the same focus that helped succeed with Damian, she triumphantly returned to modeling in 2006. With determination and overall mass appeal, Christina Mendez has since become a driving force in the modeling industry gracing the magazine pages of Glamour, Essence, Latina, All You, The Source, Venus Diva, DTM, and Urban Latino just to name a few. As Christina's dynamic smile captured audiences through print publications, runway eventually called and industry influencers soon watched her engaging persona in real time as she strutted the runway for BET's Rip The Runway, Art of Curves, Full Figured Fashion Week, Macy's and Lane Bryant.Following successful runway shows, Christina created a historical moment in the modeling industry, by becoming one of the first Hispanic real-size models to be featured on fashion campaigns such as Ashley Stewart, Baby Phat, House of Dereon, PZI Jeans, Roca Wear, Apple Bottoms, and more.National television segments and high traffic websites soon requested to work with Christina, as she represents the exotic, yet down-to-earth model that everyone can relate with in one way or another. Her talent and beauty has been featured on: Tyra.com-Fiercely Real Model Figure, Fox News (One of the Most Successful Plus Size Models), The Rachel Ray Show, BET News, The Source (One of the Most Influential Latinas),Lifetime Networks Matched in Manhattan, The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, and on Zimbio Voted as The #1 Most Beautiful Plus Size Model.Achieving nationwide campaigns and being seen on various media outlets, has afforded Christina to use her celebrity to a charity extremely close to her heart, Autism Speaks. As an Autism Speaks spokesperson for many years, Christina has volunteered much of her time to help raise awareness as well as on provide the most up-to-date information on breakthroughs and treatment for Autism.For some people conquering the runway, print campaigns, and being a media darling would be enough, but not for Christina Mendez.
